A stained wood box with shaped serpentine design front and Mother of Pearl/abalone inlaid front, lid and sides (excluding the back).
Although structurally sound, the hinges are not of the best quality, and the lid smiles slightly (this might be because of the hinges, and possibly could be eased although no guarantee is given).
The base measures just under 8.75in by about 3.125in (just over 3.75in at its deepest) and the box stands just over 2.5in deep to the top of the lid. Inside the box, the aperture measures about 7in by by 2in (about 2.5in at its widest point) and about 1.25in deep to from the bottom of the base to the top rim.
The exact age of the box is unknown but possibly dates from the middle of last century, or earlier. Probably African in origin. Weighs just over 440g.
