A pair of carved figures in traditional dress, and believed to be made from sustainable warthog tusk (see below). Although the material is believed to originate in Africa, the style of the figures is oriental.
Each figure has painted eyes (rather than inlaid) and stands approximately 3in tall, with the female figure being slight shorter than the male. Together the figures weigh just under 100g. Exact age unknown.
Note: Warthog ivory or tusk is taken from the constantly growing canine teeth as part as Wildlife Management. The tusks, more often the upper set, are worked much in the way of elephant tusks with all designs scaled down. Tusks are carved predominantly for the tourist trade in East and Southern Africa.
