A vintage, probably 1930s or thereabouts, cloisonne seal decorated with flowers and other patterns against a black ground. There are some condition issues with this item (please see ALL the photographs).
There are two holes in the base and it is thought that this item was at one stage mounted on a plinth. It is also thought that the seal once had a ball or other item attached to its nose and this is no longer there.
The extremities (fins, tail etc) are uneven to the touch, although this might possibly have been part of the manufacturing process. On the seal’s right hand side, just adjacent to the backbone, there is an area of bruising, or dullness (this has proved a little difficult to show in the photographs). The seal has been lightly cleaned only, in order not to disturb the cloisonne.
The seal measures just under 3.75in in length from the front flipper to the tail, and stands just over 3in high to the tip of its nose. Weighs just over 120g.
