A fairly contemporary Indian wooden sliding book rack (or bookslide) with pierced carving at its hinged ends of foliate and berry design, possibly vine leaves and berries or grapes, and with carved floral detail on its base. Type of wood unknown.
The bookslide has been cleaned but might benefit from further cleaning. It is structurally sound, although the hinges on both sides of the rack and frankly not the best. Neither of the hinged sides are capable of standing upright without support of, presumably, books, but then it’s assumed that they were never intended to be self-supporting.
The book rack measures approximately 16in by about 6.5in at the base and extends to just over 26in. The hinged sides stand about 6.5in high (excluding the base – total height just under 7.25in). Weighs just over 1kg. Exact age unknown but possibly dates from the middle of last century, or possibly a little later.
