A heavy antique nineteenth century brass desk or table top snuff box in the form of a book with piano style hinged front cover.
The hinged lid is engraved Peter McGregor Little Mill 1865. It seems that one Peter McGregor was the owner of the LittleMill distillery in Scotland from 1821 to 1825, one of a number of unsuccessful owners during the period 1817 to 1857, although it is believed that the distillery may have been in existence as early as 1772. Just why Mr McGregor was presented with, or had inscribed, a snuff box with the year 1865 is a moot point.
The snuff box has been lightly cleaned in order to retain what patina there is (unfortunately externally this has already been cleaned by previous owner(s) but we have left the interior as it is). Structurally sound.
The snuff box measures approximately 2.625in by about 1.875in and is just under 0.75in deep. Weighs almost 100g.
