A rather unusual vintage japanned spring loaded match book holder. The match book shown in the photographs are for display purposes only and are not included in the sale.
We believe the japanning, which is mainly brown in colour, is meant to similar a leather wallet or purse in miniature, and there is a raised cabouchon inset to the front, presumably to replicate a fastener.
The main frame is made of gold tone (probably brass coated) metal. No visible makers marks but there is a registration mark, probably German, DRGM1187807.
There is a little loss to the japanning commensurate with age and use, but other than this the matchbook holder is structurally sound with the spring being in working order. Inside the box there is a some wear/scratching and oxidisation to the metal coating.
The match book holder measures approximately 2.375in by about 1.75in and about 0.375in deep. Exact age unknown but probably dates from around the 1930s or 1940s. Weighs just over 40g.
