A fairly small vintage / antique cast brass or bronze inkwell stand in the form of a Sphinx (we are leaning towards the latter because of the weight of the Sphinx).
The head of the Sphinx is hinged and opens to reveal an aperture in the body, which we believe would have housed an ceramic or glass inkwell (not present now though). The body of the Sphinx is engraved with what looks like random patterning.
The inkwell stand has been lightly cleaned in order to retain what patina there is – we have not attempted to clean the base. The head of the Sphinx slightly wobbles on its hinges but is structurally sound.
The Sphinx measures approximately 5.5in long by about 1.5in at its widest, and stands just under 2.75in high. Weighs over 430g. Exact age unknown, as there have been many variations of this design since the Egyptomania revival in the early 1800s. However we believe this item could be late 1800s or early 1900s, or possibly a little later.
