An antique solid oak table top clerk's desk with hinged lid and pen rest to rear. The sides are joined with dovetail type joints (see photographs). There is just one compartment inside the desk, with no dividers.
The desk is structurally sound, although there are a number of stains and small dinks commensurate with age and use. The pen rest, unsurprisingly, is stained with what we think is ink, but cleaning did not remove the staining.
Inside the desk, the hinges are sound and are probably the original hinges. A ragged picture of a clown has been glued to the inside of the lid but we have been unable to remove this.
The desk once had a working double lock to the front but this is no longer working as the upper part of the lock has been removed. In addition, there is no key.
The base of the desk is covered with green baize which the buyer might wish to replace.
The desk has been cleaned lightly so as not to remove the patina and then waxed, but it might benefit from further, more expert, cleaning etc.
The overlapped top part of the desk measures approximately 16in across at the back (where the pen rest is) by about 13.5in. The base measures approximately 15in by 12in. To the rear of the desk, it measures just under 6in deep (including the overlapping top part) and to the front approximately 4in deep. Weighs over 4kg.
