A vintage, possibly antique, highly engraved metal (could be copper or brass, we’re undecided, but we don’t think it’s bronze) spill or candle holder, possibly produced in Benares, India.
The detailed engraving takes the form of foliage mostly, and paisley pattern outlines, together with some other figuring we haven’t been able to identify but which probably have some cultural significance. Under the rim at the disc towards the base of the long neck, there is a metal loop but we are unsure of its purpose.
The underside of the base has a silver coloured coating.
We have lightly cleaned the holder in order to retain the patina, but it might benefit from further, more expert, cleaning. There are a few minor dinks here and there (which have proved difficult to show on the photographs) but otherwise the holder is structurally sound and sits fairly solidly when placed on a flat surface.
The holder stands approximately 7.75in tall and the bulbous part of the holder measures approximately 4.5in in diameter at its widest. Weighs over 400g. Exact age unknown but probably dates from the earlier part of last century.
