A vintage turned and stained barrel shaped stinkwood pot and cover, believed to have been originally intended for use as a tobacco pot, but nowadays would have various uses. The front bears a picture of an African woman smoking a pipe. The underside of the lid bears the remains of a label of the maker or retailer, Kottler and Co, in South Africa.
The box has been cleaned and waxed. The patina on the lid does not match that of the main body but we have no reason to believe that this was not the original lid. The depiction of the pipe holding woman is slightly faded, as you might expect commensurate with age and use. Otherwise the box is structurally sound.
The main body of the box stands at approximately 3.75in high, and with the lid about 4.25in high to the top of the finial. The base of the box measures just under 3in in diameter. Exact age unknown, but believed to date from the first part of last century, possibly circa 1930s.
