This is believed to be a heavy vintage (possibly antique) solid brass Go to Bed match holder, with the Go to Bed element being represented by an Indian or Asian male Deity figure atop the base. We do not know who the deity is.
Towards the bottom of the Go to Bed figure is a small drilled hole into which a match can be inserted. The match holder sits on an integral footed base, the underside of which is engraved and which possibly forms a match striker. We have not tested this.
The figure has been cleaned lightly to retain some patina but might benefit from further more expert cleaning. Although structurally sound, the top and bottom, when placed together, are slightly unstable, and we think that it was intended that once a match was lit and inserted into the bottom of the upper part, then that part was detached. The upper Go to Bed part, in particular, is very tactile.
The upper and lower parts of the Go to Bed stand approximately 7in high, and together weigh just under 700g. Exact age unknown but probably dates from the first part of last century (possibly before).
Match not included.
