A vintage, possibly antique, treen (wooden) match holder in the form of a barrel shaped box.
The base has been engraved to provide a match striker, but we are not sure whether this was ever viable, and in any event, the matches used would not have been the modern safety matches available today. The lid is fairly loose fitting but by turning it slightly, we’ve found that the lid has more purchase to the base. The matches shown in the photographs are for display purposes only and are not included in the sale.
The holder has been lightly cleaned only, in order to retain the patina, but might benefit from further, more expert, cleaning. Although structurally sound, there are some dinks and slight splitting to the wood due to age, use and shrinkage.
The match holder (and lid) stands approximately 2.75in top to bottom, with the base measuring about 1.375in in diameter and the outer rim of the base just over 1.75in. The inner rim measures approximately 1.125in in diameter. Exact age unknown but thought to date from the earlier part of last century, or before that. Probably British in origin.
