A large vintage, probably antique, steel and bone or ivory combined shoe horn and button hook, probably nowadays a decorative item rather than fit for use (see later description). We have priced the item as for bone, rather than ivory, because of the uncertainty, although we are more inclined to believe that it is in fact ivory.
The whole thing measures approximately 13in from the tip of the shoe horn to the bottom of the hook on the button hook. The shaft of the button hook is made of steel. There is some staining on the bone/ivory shoe horn and some splits where it meets the metal button shaft. Otherwise, it appears to be structurally sound, although with the above proviso that this is now a decorative item only.
There is a rather unusual motif engraved into the ivory depicting some form of two headed bird, but we have been unable to find out the meaning of this. Probably dates from early twentieth or late nineteenth century.
