An antique yellow metal bar brooch with an apparently quite rare Turban shell operculum slightly off centre (see Note below). The brooch is not hallmarked, hence the description as yellow metal but it has tested positive for higher grade gold, possibly 14ct or higher. It has an unusual catch (see photographs) and a loop for a safety chain to be attached (but no safety chain).
The brooch measures just under 2in across and weighs about 5.4gms. Believed to date from the Victorian era.
Note: The operculum here is sometimes known as the Pacific Cats Eye pearl (although actually not a pearl but a calcified protein secretion of a South Seas Turban snail or Turban shell shellfish). It acts as a protection for the snail's soft body and the cabochon shaped eye like marking makes this particular operculum special).
