An antique, framed and glazed embroidery depicting a cottage with gardens to the foreground with further embroidered flora and foliage. The material into which the embroidery is stitched is unknown, but is possibly silk.
The frame appears to be structurally sound and the glass intact, but there is a degree of wear to the frame and the paper tape is starting to deteriorate (see photographs). The frame and glass have been cleaned but might benefit from further, more expert, cleaning and there is a little discoloration or staining to the area of material representing the sky. This has proved a little difficult to show in the photographs. On the back of the frame, there are one metal loop on one side (there should be two loops on either side), and no string for hanging.
On the back of the embroidery, the printed mark of what looks like Fortescue and Mann has been impressed but we have been unable to find out much about this firm except that it existed from 1890 to 1897 when it apparently closed.
The frame measures just over 14.375in by about 9in and the visible embroidery measures about 13.625in by just under 8.25in. Exact age unknown but see above. Stand not included.
