A vintage embossed and enamelled brass or bronze taper holder, with cloisonne or champleve (we have not been able to make up our minds) upper and lower banding detailing various figures against a blue ground in the lower band, and abstract design in the upper band. Exact area of origin unknown but this could be Middle Eastern, or possibly Egyptian.
The spill holder has been lightly cleaned only in order to retain what patina there is, and in order to preserve the enamelling. There is some slight loss or miss in the enamelling (quite common) and the base of the spill holder is slightly uneven, although whether this was from the time of crafting, or whether from later damage, we cannot say. The spill holder is slightly wobbly on its base. This is all reflected in the price.
The spill holder stands just under 7.25in high and weighs almost 600g. Exact age unknown but probably dates from the first part of last century.
