A small carved stone, probably agate (rather than jade), deskweight or ornament in the form of an oriental bird. The name of bird eludes us.
The bird is beautifully fashioned, with a slight roughness to the tip of its tail feathers. In addition, there appears to be a loss to one of its feet. We don’t know whether this was from the time of manufacture, or later. Otherwise the bird is structurally sound and sits well when placed on a flat surface.
The bird measures approximately 2in across from tail to tip of beak, and stands just under 2in high. Weighs just over 80g. Exact age unknown but probably dates from the first part, or middle, of last century, and probably Chinese in origin.
