A vintage 1930s wooden trinket or jewellery box, with Sorrento design inlaid lid.
The box has been lightly cleaned and waxed only, in order to retain the patina, and it might benefit from further, more expert, cleaning. There is a watermark to the front of the lid (see photographs) and there are a few small nicks and marks commensurate with age and use.
Inside the lid, there is a small bracketed and bevelled mirror. This has some age spots, which we have tried to show in the photographs. Inside the main body of the box is a relatively small padded compartment for trinkets or jewellery, together with a lined compartment which we believe houses the musical element. The internal lining is slightly darker in reality than appears in the photographs. The musical element itself seems to be working after a fashion (we’ve not been able to identify the tune). The front of the box has a lock, but we have no key and therefore we are unable to say whether the lock is working or not. The box is supported by four shaped supports (one of which is a replacement – see photographs). The lid appears to be slightly out of kilter. Other than mentioned above, the box is structurally sound.
The base of the box measures approximately 9.75in by about 4.875in, and stands approximately 2.5in to the top of the lid (including the supports on the base). The interior padded compartment measures approximately 3.375in by just over 4in and is just over 1in deep (from the rim to the top of the padded material in the base of the compartment).
