A vintage, possibly Art Deco era, heavy metal wood-lined box with hinged lid, and shagreen covered sides and base.
We believe the box to be made of pewter, but there are no visible makers marks, and we are not absolutely sure about this. However, we think the box is too heavy to be made of aluminium. The lid of the box is stippled and is attached to the base by means of a piano style hinge.
The box has been cleaned, although the cleaning was tempered by not knowing the composition of the box. It might benefit from further, more expert, cleaning. Although structurally sound, there are some minor scratches (and some deep particularly to the back) which we have tried to show in the photographs. We believe the box was originally intended as a cigarette box but it might have any number of uses. In fact, we’re tempted ourselves!
The box measures approximately 5.5in by about 3.625in at the base. The lid overlaps the base slightly by design, and the top of the box, including the sides measures approximately 5.5in by about 5in. The whole box stands on integral supports (forming part of the sides) at about 1in deep, with the interior of the box measureing approximately 4.875in by about 3.375in, and just over 0.5in deep (excluding the raised shagreen covered sides). A lovely item. Exact age unknown but probably dates from around the 1920s / 1930s. Weighs over 500g.
