A vintage white metal rattle with tapered whistle shaped handle and terminal consisting of three linked pierced rattling or tinkling balls.
The rattle does makes a tinkling sound when shaken. The whistle shaped handle does make a sound when blown, but it is not a musical one. It is believed that the rattle was meant for purely decorative or symbolic purposes but is believed to have some age. It might have been intended for hanging, rather than being held by an infant or small child.
We have described the composition as white metal, as we are not sure what metal it is made of. We suspect it is plated nickel silver but we cannot be sure. There is a small mark on the handle which leads us to think that someone might have acid tested the rattle in the past. This is not unusual.
Structurally sound, the rattle has been cleaned but might benefit from further, more expert, cleaning.
The rattle measures just under 4in long and about 1.75in across at its widest part. Probably dates from around the middle of last century. Weighs just over 17g.
