A relatively rare vintage gentleman’s posy holder / buttonhole (think Hercule Poirot!).
The posy holder is in two parts – a long hollow base, intended to hold water with the bud stem, and a shorter holder for the flower, with clip for attaching to a lapel buttonhole or pocket. This type of embellishment is often referred to as a “boutonniere”. Our particular posy holder is inscribed, on the upper part, “The Perfect” and underneath that a Patent Number of 15234/09. Unfortunately there is very little information about this holder or its patent (so far). It’s possibly that it was produced in the 1950s or before.
We aren’t sure of the composition of the holder, save that It is probably some form of coated metal. The coating, or plating, appears to be worn in a few places, mainly under the integral clip and around the rim if the longer holder. There are a few minor dinks to the main body of the holder but otherwise it appears to be structurally sound. The clip itself has a slight dink to it but it is unlikely that this would decrease its effectiveness.
The posy holder, when the two parts are put together, measures approximately 3.25in from top to bottom and is about 0.5in wide, at its widest part. Weighs just over 11g.
