A large antique oval brooch or scarf pin consisting of a malachite oval inset in a gilt metal mount, with a metal backing and pin. We think it might be possible that this was a bespoke, handmade piece, but not absolutely certain.
The edge of the mount is slightly dinked, but we have not attempted to straighten this. The clasp to the back is the standard antique C clasp and pin is sound, but with no spring (we are not sure whether there was intended to be any spring).
The malachite upper surface bears slight surface scratching, together with other marks (the barely visible scratching might be commensurate with age and use, and the other marks could be from the working of the stone).
The brooch measures approximately 2.5in across and about 1.25in from top to bottom at its deepest part. The pin at the back extends beyond the mount (see photographs) by about 0.25in. Thought to be Scottish in origin. Exact age unknown but probably is Victorian or Edwardian. Weighs around 27g.
