A pair of vintage brass bookends, one in the form of a Lion with Rose, and the other in the form of a Unicorn, also with a rose.
Historically and symbolically, the Lion would represent England and the Unicorn, Scotland, and together the two represent the United Kingdom.
The bookends are structurally sound and have been given light cleaning only (we aren’t sure whether the pair have been coated with gilt or other material) in order to retain the patina. It is usually our practice not to over clean brass, pewter etc but to leave it as found.
The bookends stand approximately 6in tall and base measures about 5.5in by 3in. Together they weigh almost 1280g. Exact age unknown but probably date from the first, or middle, part of last century.
