A vintage, possibly antique, pair of what we can only describe as fender ornaments.
At first we thought these items were fire dogs, but the construction of these items does not seem to bear this out. Each ornament is decorated with a rather strange combination of central face of a king, or deity, flanked on each side by a winged collar out of which appears to be a serpent’s head, out of whose mouth erupts a foot with what appear to be cloven hooves. Atop this is a trophy like urn with acanthus leaf decoration, and, possibly a pineapple. We have no idea of the origin of this item, and can find no makers or registration marks.
The brass front is supported by a metal, probably iron, strut which is slightly oxidised but sound.
The fender ornaments stand approximately 10.25in high (one is very slightly taller than the other) and measure about 6.5in across at the base. Together they weigh over 1.75kg, with one ornament being heavier than the other. Exact age unknown but probably dates from the first part of last century.
